ReplyDeleteDear Mary,
ReplyDeleteHow are you? Are you feeling any better? You missed on James class today. But,there is no need to worry, I will tell you all the juicy details.
I went to the class and I was five minutes late and James got really upset and angry and I said to myself, that's not good. I wanted to explain that it was me and my dam luck and those traffic jams, but I remained quite after all. Anyhow, thank God he got all exited again and today's class turn out to be interesting and fun.
We covered and analyze an essay written by the famous author, Rose Macaulay. You will find it in our text book, on page 400. The title of the essay is " Evening Parties".
In brief, I am letting you know that the author is narrating what takes place at a party. She manages also, to rise up several questions regarding the fact,if we ought to attend parties and why we attend them.
Macaulay used the language in such a way, that she got me all confused. Can you imagine that? I thought she was being to serious in her description but on the contrary, she was being cleverly sarcastic. She went in to deep writing about how we, the humans, labeled by her as creatures thus animals, follow up on everything that comes along, like little soldiers.
She says that we go to parties because a lot of people will be there.Soon as the invitation comes, we mark the date in our calendar. Then, we start to wonder" What should I ware?"," Should I go or not?","Will I meet the right people?". The writer is making fun of us ,the people, by implying that we do not even consider the fact that- the impression we want to make on others, only marks the suppression we feel deep inside.
The author argues all elements which are involved at a party, in an extreme manner-or does she not? Vagueness disappears as reality comes along. We do go to parties - so does Macaulay! And what was all that talks for? Do I dare to ask? Well done!
Anyway, after finishing all that party thing we eventually did something meaningfull. You must do this exercise at home.
Think of a word and write it down on a piece of paper. Then make a circle and divide it to eight parts. Write down as many elements you believe correlate with the word you have chosen originally. By doing this circle three or more times if necessary, we learn how to narrow down our topic. At the very end, we have our title and we Know exactly what issues to examine in our essay.James also talked about a pyramid thing which we draw upside down, but I think you must ask someone else because I don't really remember and I do not want to give you any false informations.
Don't tell anyone, but I really had a rough time with this, since narrowing down has being my biggest problem in the past ...
Melina
Dear classmate,
ReplyDeleteI hope you are getting well and soon to be able to come back in our class. As Melina said we are here to tell you about what we did in the class. Rose Macaulay wrote our discussion essay which is ‘’ Evening parties’’.
Our first impression for reading this essay was that the author didn’t used any plan for writing the essay but then we figure out that she actually had a plan. She chosen the subject ‘parties’ and then she focus on the reasons why we go to parties.
What Melina didn’t mention is that some of the reasons are being destroyed by the author. For example the reason of social is a good reason for going to a party but the author destroys this idea by saying that we don’t go to parties because we want to be socialized but because we have to and it comes from our nature.
However I think that I must convince you why this is an ironic essay as to be easier for you not to get confused. In the first paragraph sixth line she wrote ‘someone else’s expense’ meaning that we eat free food because someone else paid for us. Moreover in page 402 second paragraph ninth line she wrote ‘I ate two chocolates’ this is also sarcastic because in parties you talk about people first not about the food.
Furthermore, as for the pyramid that James told us about is not necessary to know it because is the same skeptical with the method of circles as kindly Melina had described to you. James said that as another way of planning your essay, meaning that from something general we must go to something specific like the pyramid, the base is the general idea of our essay and the top of the triangle is the specific idea of our essay.
That’s all from me; I hope I have given you a hand in understanding this essay.
Dear Mary,
ReplyDeleteUnfortunately you missed our class but don’t worry we are here to explain to you what we have done in Wednesday’s lesson in order to follow the material and also we all hope to get well soon to come back in our class. Our discussion essay for this week is ‘Evening parties’ by Rose Macaulay.
To start with this essay is a bit tricky because, Rose tried to fool us, but then we figure out that she actually had a plan. According to the subject of the essay which is evening parties, she concentrates to the reasons why we go to the parties. Indeed, the writer destroys the reason of meeting new people into a party by saying that people nowadays don’t go to the parties to be socialized, but because is in our nature to go there or we only enjoy these parties because we are forced to do it.
Moreover the tone of the writer’s the way she wrote the essay was sarcastic and ironic and this is what I am trying to explain. Rose is bringing ironic observations of human life by also using metaphors. Also in most of the essay she keeps the ironic tone such as in 6th line of the first paragraph which insults human beings by telling the truth that eating free foods and free drink is better than paying it. she make fun of what people do by creating again and again an ironic voice. For the writer the best way to enjoy parties is not to talk to anyone, staying alone and stand in a solitary position. I mostly like that she used the method of Juxtaposition by putting too many ideas. In this case Rose describes human as animals, history evolution, and little piece of pasteboard card. She uses a lot of unusual terms too with a very rich vocabulary by using phrasal verbs also.
Her conclusion was very interesting because she was actually playing with us, she had ironic inflections and she ends up with a very rhetorical position.
Moreover, as for the pyramid James told us about is to help us to understand better when we want to analyze a subject more and more in detail. This is another way of planning the essay by getting something from general to specific; and the base of this triangle is the whole idea of the essay and the top is the specific idea of the triangle.
Well, after all of this I hope I make it clear to you what our lesson was about.
My Dear classmate Evi
ReplyDeleteHow are you? Unfortunately you were absent on Monday. I hope it is not an important thing and you will come next time. I will tell you everything which I understood on the latest class. Mr. MacKay investigated a kind of way to write an essay throughout explaining the essay written by Rose Macaulaty. It has specific title, main body and a way to show her feeling of those things and she has finished it without conclusion.
First you should choose a specific title. For example evening parties is a specific party. As Mr. MacKay explained, a word has a broad meaning. For example love: it includes faith, trust, sex, nature, etc. And also love of nature can include people, weather, plants, etc. For better understanding, you can draw a circle and divided in 8 or more and write something that is related to that word. As you see below:
LOVE
• FAITH
• TRUST
• SEX
• NATURE:
o WEATHER
o PEOPLE
o PLANTS
o ANIMAL
Second, you should note the reasons of the subject and develop them throughout main body .In this essay she has three reasons to go to a party. One is social, the other one is eating, and the last is instinct.
PARTY
• FUN
• FOOD
• BEING TOGETHER
• KIND OF PARTY
• MUSIC
• PLACE
• RESPECT
• DRESS
Third, you should choose one tone to show your intention. For example in this essay she uses ironic tone, because she believes that evening party is not good so she uses this tone to express her intention. Sometimes she applies very polite sentences .It shows ironic as well. It is finished without conclusion .She leaves the essay unfinished so that the reader continues. Mr. MacKay said that she wants to play with reader.
In conclusion, when you want to write an essay you should go from broad topic to narrow topic, as you see:
PARTY > FOR SPESIFIC DAY > BIRTHDAY PARTY > MY BIRTHDAY PARTY
GOODLUCK!
Farah
Dear Mary,
ReplyDeleteHow are you? I hope you are getting well until you come back to the class. You have lost a great lesson with James, but don't worry we are doing to tell you all that we have done. In Wednesday's class, James taught us an essay from Rose Macaulay " Evening Parties."
First of all, we all thought that Rose did not have a plan through her essay, but she actually had a plan. She began her essay asking a couple of questions in order to introduce the topic "Parties." Then, she concentrated to the reasons, 'why do people go to parties?.'She has followed an ironic tone, putting dominant images and metaphors with a sarcastic way. For instance, she was ironic with the phrases such as " someone's else expense, elegant foods about the palate." She was also used metaphors to introduce humans as animals, by the word'primitive'and the word 'instinct'in order to show that the reasons why people go to parties are ridiculous.
Rose forgot to talk about the socialization part of the parties. Through her essay clarifies that parties worked against to be social. Again, using the phrase ' I ate two chocolates, and that sandwish pleased me," it appeared ridiculous for her that people may go to parties only to eat.
Finally, she finished her essay without a conclusion. Rose through her essay played with us in some kind. In the whole essay, she appeared to disgust parties, so at the end she made her own conclusion.
And as Farahnaz said,James through this course showed us a pyramid, a word with a broad meaning to narrow it down. So, we made up a circle and we broke it into eight pieces and write down something that is related to that word. I think this is
good exercise to help us so that we can analyse enough the subject.Farahnaz also told us that Rose followed an ironic tone in her essay, but she could have mentioned phrases that may show Rose's tone and intention. For example, looked to the phrases that I mentioned before.
That's all Mary. I hope that you have a good understanding so that it is clear to you what we have done.
Dear Mary,
ReplyDeleteIn our lesson on Wednesday, we went through Rose Macaulay’s essay “Evening parties”. When we first read the essay, I thought that the author’s tone was serious. When we read the essay for a second time though, I realized that the tone was ironic. Rose repots several reasons of why people go to parties. She names all the reasons that she intends to talk about, in the first paragraph of the text, by using a smart technique. Rose managed to place all the reasons in a five line long sentence by using semicolons (;). That adds an interesting element in her essay.
After that, Rose elaborated on each reason individually of why do people go to parties, but by being ironic while doing so. For example, in page 402 second paragraph, she says that all that can stay in a person’s mind after being at a party is that he/she had free food and drinks. That by itself is a very satisfactory reason to go to a party.
What surprised me in her essay is that in her last line of the essay, she actually says that she enjoys parties. Since she used an ironic tone throughout the text, I was expecting from her to say that she does not enjoy going to parties.
During the lesson, James showed us a technique for making our essays more specific on a certain aspect. For example, if we are asked to write an essay about love, as we did in the first lesson, we can follow a certain procedure in order to do so. We can draw a circle and write in it as many points as we can think on the given subject. Then, take the one that we like the most, draw another circle and write several points about it. We can keep narrowing down each point until we reach to the ideal one.
Dear Evi,
ReplyDeleteOn Wednesday we studied Rose Macaulays essay "Evening Parties". When we first read the essay we all thought that the author was serious, that she didnt like parties at all; but later on when we read it for a second time, we realized that she wasnt serious but ironic to the whole party situation.
Rose at the beginning of the essay uses semicolons to state the reasons why people go to parties which makes the essay interesting because by doing that she lengthens each sentence and makes it seem humorous.
Moving on to the main body Rose expands her reasons in detail, making it more visible to the reader that she is being sarcastic. She makes fun of how people act when they get invited, and how they act during the party when they socialize with strangers. She also states that some people go to such parties to get something good to eat, like a sandwich, a chocolate, a drink and maybe if they are fortunate enough the host might have some ice cream; and that would make the party even better!
What really impressed all of us was that at the end of the essay she undercuts her own conclusion by saying that she actually enjoys going to such paties!
Later on James showed us a technique on how to plan our essay ideas better, by getting from a more general idea to a more specific one by narrowing down each point until we reach the very specific idea we want.
Thats all from me, I hope I helped you.
Dear Mary,
ReplyDeleteHow are you? Unfortunate, you missed the class on Wednesday but don’t worry about it because I will clear up what we have done. I hope you getting well and see you soon. This week, we covered an essay written by Rose Macaulay, which is “Evening Parties”.
First of all, the subject of the essay was Parties which she managed to introduce the topic through a couple of questions. Then, she concentrated to the reasons why we have to attend parties by using semicolons which make her essay more interesting.
Moreover, the whole main body is consist of mock to the people who are like to go at parties .The language that author used is complex and the tone is ironic that she succeeds that by putting dominant images and metaphors with a sarcastic way. For instance, in the 1st paragraph mentioned that “someone else expense” and “elegant food about the palate”mean that we attend parties only to fill our stomach of free food that somebody else paid for these that this is absolute ironic. I believe that the authors with this technique emphasize that parties is against to the socialization of humans. The reason is that, she believe that to enjoy one party is don’t talk to anyone just pass time alone and stand in a solitary position. Rose used the method of Juxtaposition by describes humans being as animals.
In conclusion, the authors take out whole point because she wrote “I do not enjoy the parties” and in some way she is playing with us. She manage to has a successful discussion about the party and amuse the reader but eventually no conclusion in the end.
Afterwards, James gave us important way of how we plan our essay more specific. For instance, he asked to write down the word smell and then make a circle and divide it to parts. Then, write down as many elements that are relate with the main word. After, take the one that you interest more and again draw another circle and write several points. We can do this particular procedure until we reach to the ideal one.
Dear Evi,
ReplyDeleteOn Wednesday's course we have discussed an essay from the Oxford book in page 400. The essay's title is “evening parties” and it is written by Rose Macaulay. The subject of the essay is the parties and the reasons that make people attend to them. An important thing to know is that the writer uses a unique way of developing this essay and from a simple subject as “evening parties” is, she manages to make it complex.
The first thing you need to know about this essay is that the writer uses a very “tricky” way of writing and that the whole essay it is formed in a sarcastic; ironic way rather than serious. Some examples that we found whilst reading the essay were the phrase at the first paragraph “someone else's expense” and in page 402 the sentence “so that your host or hostess may, in despair of making you talk, give you to eat”. As you can tell from those examples Rose's main point was that people don't go to parties for social purposes as they claim but they go for the free food and drink. Another example of the writer's ironic “attitude” is the conclusion, which as Fotinie mentioned it comes to break down the whole essay since the writer despite all of her negatives reasons for someone going to parties, she states that she enjoys attend them.
Moreover through this essay, we learned two new concepts. The concept of juxtaposition and the concept of semicolons (;). Juxtaposition occurs when the writer puts two images or ideas next to each other. An example of Juxtaposition in the essay is when Rose put the idea of humans as animals next to the idea of people being civilized “little piece of pasteboard”. The concept of semicolons (;) is an interesting technique that allows you to organize a list of things in one paragraph. You can see it in practice by looking at the first paragraph of the essay.
Finally after finishing the analysis of the essay, James taught us a very useful way to plan and organize our essays. To be more clear, he gave us the subject “smell” and what he asked us to do is to draw a circle and wrote in it everything that according to us is associated with the word smell. Then he asked us to choose one of the things we wrote and do the same thing with another circle. This way help us move from general to specific and finally end up with a specific topic.
That's all Evi, I hope we make it clear for you what we have done in class and I hope you feel better and be able to come back in class next Wednesday.
Dear Evie,
ReplyDeleteWe have learned about a problem you were facing recently and we hope to pass it through and have you with us as soon as possible. On Wednesday's lesson, we've read an essay named "Evening parties" written by Rose Macaulay. As you will understand from the title the subject of the essay is the parties and consentrates at the reasons we got to them. Some of these reasons that Macaulay refers to at her essay are: for meeting people, to have fun, for the food and maybe for showing of themeselves.
An important thing about the essay is that the approach and the tone of the writer is mostly ironic and sarcastic rather than serious. Some examples we found are, "dolled up", " someone else's expend", but the most ironic point comes in conclusion, where Macaulay breaks down the whole essay where she talked about the negative reasons of going to parties and at the end states that she actually enjoys attending them. Also as you will see while reading it, Macaulay closes the essay by using three foolstops, and James told us that is very risky to do that and you must be an excellent writer to try it.
At this lesson we also learn, two more concepts from this essay. The one is called Juxtaposition, which is two ideas next to each other for example human as animals and the concept of semicolons, which allow you to organize your thoughts or things in one paragraph the one after the other.Macaulay except these, is also using dominant images and metaphors.
Last but not least James told us about a technique we can use to narrow down a subject and make it more specificand it may be very useful to us.He told us to take the word love and make a circle with things that are related to love. After that we choose one of these like "family love" and make another circle for writing thoughts that we may use in our essay.
So, to sum, that's all we did.I hope that I helped you understand what we did and we all wish to see you next Wednesday.Take care.
Dear Evi,
ReplyDeleteas you lost Wednesday's lesson me and all your classmates we are posting to the block for you so to don't miss anything.
As I note above they let you up to date of what happened at the class. We covered Macaulay's essay "Evening Parties" at page 400 to your Oxford Book of essays.
First of all we start reading the text and we come up with unknown words like every time and James with his own way explain us in details everything. Then we had a brief discussion through thee essay about the reasons we go to parties. We come up with the reasons that refers to the essay:meeting people, food , to have fun and sometimes to showing off yourself.
Secondly we discussed about the tone that Macaulays use. Her approach is irony according to page 401 1st paragraph" or eating agreeable food at someonoe else's expenase,or even at one's own; or playing some game with a ball". An excellent ironic point as she refers to free food.In my bielief nowdays its still stand this idea. Most of the people that i know the first that are going to think about if they are invited at a party is the food. She also use many negative words (neglect, admonition, ommisioins e.t.c)and her tone is more sarcastic rather serious as Alexia comented above and I totally agree with her.
Another point that we mentioned is the "juxta possision" that are two images at the same position like human as animals as Macaulay refers.I cant elaborate on that but I am sure that James does.
Thirdly as many of our claamates commented we learned how to narrow down the tittle of an essay so to be more easier for us. We draw down a circle and we brake down a word for example "smell" is a general thought you have to learn to come up with different thoughts about smell, at the end word smell become " books smell reminds me education", that it was my example.I bieleve I can elaborate on that and write a good essay.
All in all. it's your turn now to take a piece of paper exactly A4size and draw a circle. After fifteen minutes you will be able to find out the perfect tittle for an essay. If you need any help, here is the block, contact us.
See you in class.
Dear Evi,
ReplyDeletesince you lost last Wednesday's lesson we are writing to the blog to tell you all about it. So, last Wednesday we've read an essay named "Evening parties" written by Rose Macaulay.
Firstly we read the text and then as we always do James explained us the unknown words. Then we had a discusion about what we understand about the essay, what was the subject and then we discussed the reason to go to parties and we said that this was the consentration of the essay.
Secondly we discussed about the tone of the essay and we also said that her approach was irony according to some parts of the essay. Macaulay uses irony in a very smart way so some of us thought at the beggining that the approach of the essay was serious and not ironic but James helped us understand the irony. Also another point that we discussed was the juxta posision that are two images at the same position like human as animals and the little piece of cardboard.
Finally at the second part of the lesson James showed as a way of making a general topic to a more specific title of an essay. He said to us to take a blank piece of paper and draw a circle on it, then divide the cyrcle in eight pieces. He gave as the word "smell" as a topic and he said to us to write down what comes into our minds. Then we took the one part of the cyrcle and did the same thing again so we can have a more specific title.
To conclude that was basicly what we did in class last Wednesday. I hope that we helped you understand what we did and we all wish to see you next Wednesday.
Dear Evi,
ReplyDeleteUnfortunately you missed a class the previous Wednesday but don’t worry all your classmates we are posting to the block for you so you don’t miss anything. The previous Wednesday our lesson what about evening parties in page 400 from the Oxford book of essays. Macaulay’s essay what about the evening parties and why we go to evening parties.
To start with, we start reading the text and we came up with unknown words as we did every time and James tried to explain to us in details everything. Later we make a brief discussion on parties and James wrote on the board the reasons why we go to parties and we find out reasons that refers to the essay: meeting people, have fun, showing off our self’s and something else going by instinct.
To continue with, we discussed about the tone that Macaulay use. Her approach is ironic and sarcastic according to page 400, 1st paragraph, 5th line “or eating agreeable food at someone else’s expense, or even at one’s own;” An excellent ironic point as she refers to free food. Another point that we mentioned is the “juxta position” that are two images at the same position like human as animals as Macaulay refers.
To end with, as our classmates said we learn how to narrow down the title of an essay so to be easier for us. To give you an example in order to understand it better James wrote in the board the word love which is something general and he continued by narrowing it down: Love – Love for animals – Love for dogs – My dog spot – How my dog died.
So, to sum, that’s all we did last Wednesday and know I hope to be able to draw down a circle a brake down a word.
See you in class.
Dear Mary,
ReplyDeleteUnfortunately, you've missed the class last week, but don't worry, everything will be clear to you, instead of study our responces. I hope everything will be ok and soon to be back to us, to your classmates and am sure you will.
Altough, you will see the today's lesson threw your reading on page 400, "Evening Parties" by Rose Macualay. Mackay and we, your classmates have discussed this particular essay and we found the appropriate details, where the writer referred to.
Firstly,I agree with the above statement that we've discussed the reasons to go to a party and we ensured that we don't go to parties just for fun, bur also because of food, meeting people and to showing off ourselves.
Secondly, we came out with the predict tone that is used from the writer. Her way of approaching the readers and her topic was ironic and this seemed to page 400 at the beginning, who said, "Human beings are curious creatures, and in nothing more curious than in the forms of diversion, which they devise for themselves. Some of these are quite comprehensible;they give physical or mental plessure". Nevertheless, she didn't use only the form of irony, but also the forms of sarcastic tone and humorous in some cases. Her structure was complex without explaining clearly and obvious the particu;ar topic. As my classmate above mentioned, which I disagree , that the writer use negative words. What does this mean? she just used a difficult vocabulary, which Mackay explained to us the difficult words.
Thirdly, in this essay we also seen the juxtaposition which defines as to take two things and to put them together. Macaulay used the term of humans to be at the same position as animals.
To conclude, Mrs.Rose hasn't even write a clear conclusion for her essay, because she has just discussed about the evening parties, but without to write her argument or her final thoughts at the end. Although, she took out all the points of the eesay and instead of viewing the topic we've seen a trivial party.
So, enjoy your reading, have fun and I hope to see you on the next lesson. Thanks.
Mackay am really sorry, but I was writting my responce under froso and 2 girls wrote it first. So I've discussed my responce based on Froso's essay.
ReplyDeletedear all i appreciate you helped me out. Thank you all for your summaries. I missed class because I was pregnant and saw manytimes blood. This resulted in me losing the baby. I also quit college because after i lost my baby I crushed my car. Therefore I would like to say goodbye to all of you. Mr Mackay you are a great teacher.
ReplyDeleteEvi, I am so sorry to hear this. Our thoughts are with you and your family.
