Statement of Goals

Writing an essay is a big deal and requires a lot of effort, skills and practice. Taking a course such as Advanced Expository Writing I am expecting to improve some of my writing skills and learn some others. Elements and skills that can contribute in writing a good essay can be organizing skills, vocabulary, syntax, coherence in what you write, grammar, revision, creative skills and also research skills.
In my experience in writing, up until now, I find my self good in creating strong arguments to support my thesis statements and to develop my subject in a coherence way. I believe that I am able to describe or explain my self clearly while writing an essay, even though I sometimes struggle to find the exact or the “perfect” word to use in order to have my description on the paper as I have it in my mind. Generally even though my vocabulary is not as rich as I would like to be, I try to search different words in the dictionary in order to make my essay more interesting and less flat to the reader.
On the other hand there are some things that I don't do well as a writer. First of all I have trouble in organizing my essay. Why is this? This is because I rarely plan my essays and this has as a result to spent a lot more time in writing my essay. Another thing that I have to improve is my research skills. In my opinion a research in order to be a “proper” research you have to search more than one resource. The thing that I do and I think that needs to be improved is that when I do my research I emphasize on the one resource that I will find satisfying things to write.
Overall through this course I would like and I hope to improve and even adopt some skills that later on will help me write better or more “proper” essays. Each skill can be useful, but personally I believe that organizing skills will be the most useful to me. In order to achieve these skills I will have to work with the course material by practicing on writing essays using the skills that I have trouble the most and also by revising and take into consideration the comments that the readers of my essay will make.
